2nd Grade -English Language Arts - Beep Bop
Sabah' el kheir', Panda Pal! Today we’ll be doing an English Language Arts (ELA) activity called “Beep Bop."
Materials Needed: Pen or pencil and paper.
Instructions: Explain to your child that in this activity they'll practice identifying short and long vowel sounds in words. Remind them that a long vowel sound is when the vowel says its own name, like the sound you hear in the word beep, which has a long e sound. A short vowel is a sound you hear in the word bop, which has a short o sound.
Tell your child that you are going to write a series of words. Their job is to read the word out loud and listen carefully to the vowel sound. If the word has a short vowel sound like in the word bop, they should bop themselves on the head. If it has a long vowel sound like in the word beep, they should press their nose and say "beep!"
Choose words from the list below to write for your child. Be sure to use a mix of long and short vowel words.
Long: team, boat, soon, peek, hike, cute, ride, plane, slime, shape, shine, grape, snake, soap, price, bone, sheep, paint, post
Short: hat, hop, mug, gift, drop, tub, wink, skunk, snack, scrub, cliff, sting, plan, truck, wash, bump, smell, song, flat
Quick Tip: If you don't have paper and pen handy, you can play this game by saying words aloud and having your child listen for the vowel sound. Need more help? Click on the Help link below.
