Learning Connections

Learning to identify short and long vowel sounds is a foundational reading skill. In Kindergarten and first grade, there is a heavy instructional focus on phonemic awareness, which is hearing different sounds in worlds. In second grade and beyond, most students have mastered phonemic awareness and are now developing other skills to read words on the page, including more complicated vowel combinations. In order for your child to become a stronger reader, they must internalize phonics, or letter-sound correspondences, and also must learn to read words spelled irregularly. The best way to do this is lots of repetition. Games that give your child practice thinking about and reading words in isolation are a great way to reinforce key phonics skills like short and long vowels. It's also very important for your child to read words in books every day, even if it's only for a few minutes.
