What is my child learning?
Elementary school children learn important social and emotional skills. This activity fosters critical thinking and respect for others' opinions. It also provides opportunities for children to learn new vocabulary and develop listening skills. These skills contribute to children’s social interactions, empathy towards others, and effective communication. The activity also ties into literacy skills around comparing and contrasting. Through comparing the two options, making a choice of their own, and exploring others’ choices, children develop important skills of empathy and comparison.

“I’m not sure. Swimming in jellybeans would be like a tiny ball pit, but marshmallows are like little pillows.”
“Neither, but if I had to pick I’d say marshmallows. Soft, cuddly, and fluffy.”
“Jellybeans–I’d be really scared to drown in marshmallows.”
“It all depends on the size of the marshmallow and how hot of a day it is. If they are little marshmallows and it’s not that hot, sounds like a super soft swim. If the marshmallows are big or it’s really hot, they would melt and you would get stuck.”
