Can We Find It?

Hello Panda Pal! Today we’ll be doing a Kindergarten English Language Arts (ELA) activity called, "Can We Find It?” In this activity, you're going to practice your sight words.

Materials: Print out and cut out the Dancing Panda Sight Words.

Instructions: Place the sight word cards face down on a surface like a table or the floor and tell your child that they are going to play an activity with their sight words.

Tell your child they are a magician - and using their magic - they need to find a specific word. Choose one of the words from the list below and tell your child to try and find it by turning over one sight word at a time. 

When the child turns over a sight word, have them say the word aloud. Once they find the word they were looking for, do a little dance, then turn all the words face down and try again!

What is my child learning?

In Kindergarten, children start to learn sight words. Sight words generally refers to a list of the most commonly occurring words in writing. As children learn to read, it will be extremely important that they can identify these words they will see often. Sight words are often abstract and do not have an image that represents them. Some sight words are difficult to decode or sound out, so it is important that students commit them to memory.

Need some help doing this activity?

Tips:

  • If there are words children are still working on mastering, you can put them to the side and remove them from the game for now. 

  • You can choose to play this game like “memory” by leaving the cards in the same spot between rounds (children may remember where certain words were) or make it harder by mixing the cards up between rounds (they’ll just be guessing)/

  • Try flipping the roles. The child can give the adult a word, and the adult can be the one trying to find it.
