Want to learn more about Saturn and Jupiter?

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system.

Saturn is the second largest. Jupiter is bigger and denser than Saturn. Jupiter has a radius of 43,440.7 miles while Saturn has a radius of 36,183.7 miles. Did you know 1,300 earths could fit into Jupiter? Holy cow!

Saturn is bigger if you include its rings. Saturn’s rings are much bigger than Jupiter’s. Scientists believe that Saturn has anywhere from 500-100 rings whereas scientists have only observed 4 rings around Jupiter. Saturn’s rings are 170,000 miles across! That’s like driving across the United States from New York to California over 55 times! Jupiter’s rings are much narrower and are about 3,700 miles in width. So, if you count the rings, Saturn is bigger than Jupiter!

Learning Connections

In elementary school science, students learn that there are different ways to measure bigger and smaller. For example, one item might have a larger volume, but be smaller in width than another. This trivia question asks students to think critically. They must make sure they understand what is being asked, and whether their given answer truly answers the question.
