The answer is…
Neither or Both!
Both Ice Cream and cake are great treats to have on a hot day but neither will make you cooler. Studies show that ice cream actually warms your body! After the initial cooling bites on your tongue your body then heats up through the digestion process. Ice cream contains significant amounts of fat and sugar, when these are broken down by the body heat is released which in turn increases your body's temperature. The same is true for cake. So enjoy your favorite of either next to the cool air conditioning!

Learning Connections
In school children begin to learn about the difference between growing foods and treats. Growing foods are full of nutrition and give you energy to play and learn, treats are fun and delicious and bring joy. There are a lot of treat options and with their expanding palates it is important for children to understand what options are available. When it is hot outside young children can be tempted to focus on their play and activities but balanced meals are important to boost their energy. After their growing foods children can be directed to exercise their agency and think about which treat they would like to eat for this meal. This agency helps children develop a healthy relationship with food.
